Understand the Caro-Kann Defense, not just the moves

Horatio Caro and Marcus Kann analyzed the defense in the late nineteenth century. Its durable c6-d5 structure gives Black a sound center while usually freeing the light-squared bishop.

Core plan

Black aims for ...Nd7, ...Ngf6 and a timely ...c5 break. White uses the space advantage to develop actively and can target h7 after the bishop moves to g6.

Ask at the board: Is ...Bf5 safe, and when should White gain space with h4?

Common mistake

Black's recurring error is locking the c8 bishop behind ...e6; White's is launching h4-h5 before the center and king are secure.
